Introducing the Kodály Method in the Lao National College of Arts

Ms. Edit Lánczky, a Hungarian music teacher currently working for the Liszt Institute in Beijing, ran a training programme at the Lao National College of Arts between September 30 and October 9, jointly organized by the College and the Embassy of Hungary in Vientiane.

In the framework of the programme, Ms. Edit conducted an intensive course for about 40 students of the College, based on the internationally acclaimed music education methodology developed by the renowned Hungarian composer Mr. Zoltán Kodály, and she also led two half-day workshops for introducing the Kodály Method to the relevant teachers of the College. Through practical activities, participants were introduced to the central role of singing in musical education, to the methods and possibilities of learning by ear, relative solmisation, hand signs, rhythm syllables, as well as developing inner hearing, musical memory, music reading and writing skills. The two-week training programme concluded with a joint performance, which featured not only choral pieces rehearsed under the visiting teacher’s guidance but also Laotian dance and musical performances. At the end of the closing event, our Embassy hosted a reception for the students and instructors who participated in the program, for the school’s management and for other distinguished guests.
